What Is the History of Charleston?

Charleston’s roots go back to the American Revolutionary War. After the war ended, many pioneers ventured across the Appalachian Mountains. One Virginia militia officer, William Morris, was among the first to settle in the Kanawha Valley. In 1787, Colonel George Clenedin bought over 1,000 acres in the area and later built Fort Lee. The State of Virginia officially chartered the town in 1794. Back then, it was called “Charlestown” after Clenedin’s father. However, the name was later changed and simplified to “Charleston” in 1819. Growth came from an unlikely place. By 1820, Charleston had become one of the country’s largest salt producers thanks to its local brine wells. Later, coal mining, natural gas extraction, and chemical manufacturing helped the city grow. After West Virginia separated from Virginia and became an official state, Charleston was chosen as the capital in 1885. Today, Charleston is home to just under 50,000 people, but the larger metropolitan area has a population of over 200,000. The area also attracts countless visitors annually.
